My Work & Impact

From the salon into classrooms, industry gatherings, and collaborative education.

Through Jaha Hair Studio, natural hair education, the Natural Hair Industry Convention, and STRAND Network™, I've helped create opportunities for professionals to share knowledge and strengthen their practice.

My Hair, My Way

Consumer education to help people understand and care for their natural hair.

2014Co-founder

Natural Hair Industry Convention

Co-founded with Angela Walker in 2014 to give natural hair professionals and educators a place to learn and connect. The first meetup followed in 2015 and the first convention in 2016. Its work continues today as the Natural Hair Industry Collective.

Through the Collective, I am exploring new ways for professionals to share knowledge, ask for support, and build useful connections. The goal is a professional community where experience is valued, original ideas are respected, and collaboration has room to grow.

STRAND Network™

Stylists Training, Researching, And Networking with Dermatologists

As a co-founder of STRAND Network™ with dermatologist Dr. Chesahna Kindred, I help connect professional hair care education with dermatology. STRAND brings hair care professionals, dermatology, and communities together around education, earlier recognition of hair-loss and scalp concerns, responsible referral, and appropriate professional collaboration, across all types of hair loss and scalp conditions. This work reflects my commitment to stronger knowledge, responsible professional practice, and collaboration that respects the distinct roles of hair care professionals and healthcare providers.

CHECK YOUR CENTER PART™

CHECK YOUR CENTER PART™, created and owned by Susan L. Peterkin, encourages awareness of visible changes in the center part and recognition of when further evaluation may be appropriate. It is used within STRAND Network™ education. It began as an educational tool that I still teach, and it is now also a digital book, coming soon to the Shop.

For professionals, the approach emphasizes becoming familiar with a client's hair and scalp over time, documenting observations, recognizing changes, and making appropriate referrals within professional scope. Recognition is not diagnosis.
